| The UU Peacemaking Congregational Study Action Issue |
|
As Unitarian Universalists, we have the opportunity to take action on issues that are important to us individually and as a religion. There are many opportunities for involvement—locally, nationally and internationally. One opportunity that occurs at a national level is the Congregational Study Action Issue (CSAI). Each year at the General Assembly our association votes on an important issue to study and take action on. After an issue is chosen, the Commission on Social Witness (CSW) undergoes years of study, research and practice. The CSW then drafts a Statement of Conscience (SOC), receives comments and suggestions from congregations, and then a vote is taken on whether to place the Statement of Conscience on the Final Agenda at the next GA to be further revised and voted upon. PEACEMAKING For 2006-2010, the CSAI is Peacemaking. The CSW has already gone through 4 years of study, and has drafted an SOC. Please find the entire SOC available here: http://www.uua.org/socialjustice/issuesprocess/currentissues/peacemaking/121606.shtml.
From November 15, 2009 through February 1, 2010, congregations are invited to take a Congregation Poll to vote on whether or not the peacemaking Statement of Conscience should appear on the 2010 General Assembly Final Agenda—to be further revised and voted on.
This year, Prairie will be adding our voice to this national conversation. On January 17th the Social Justice Committee at Prairie will host a Congregational Social Justice Forum on Peacemaking. Please join us to learn more about the CSAI process, the Statement of Conscience and more.
During the January 24th Congregation meeting, we will then vote on whether or not we think the SOC should be added to the Final Agenda at the 2010 General Assembly for further revisions and voting.
